Pope John Paul II and The Virgin Mary

Got this e-mail and want to share it to the world.

We don't know why John Paul II wanted to hide this picture for years. The Vatican published this picture recently, for first time. This picture was taken by one of his security guards just when the Pope was attacked and was falling down in his Papamobil. You can see the pain in his face.

Joaquin Navarro Valls, who is the one spokesman from The Vatican, said that they made a lot of studies for years of this incredible picture and of course about the quality of the developing of the picture because when it was developed nobody could see very well because the image was not clear. Finally, and after so many controls and being looking and checking by all the experts in photography (around the world), they decided that there were no tricks in it and today they give us this beautiful gift from our Mother of God.

You can see the Mother of God holding John Paul II in her arms. Beautiful right?

Joaguin Navarro-Valls is the retiring Vatican Media Spokesperson. I Checked it out. His name is not associated with this story or this photo. My first visit to Simple Thoughts of Mine. And yes I was checking out this story for a friend.

    Little John

Atheists... You try to analyze everything that you can and when you cant comprehend it, you then concluded that there is no God... Poor excuse of your incompetence...

Dude I'm a catholic not an atheist, and I also do art. That my friends is a photoshopped picture. that looks like they superimposed Pope John Paul onto a painting of Mary and then drew arms in

If you do a bit of searching on Google Images, you can find larger versions of this image (e.g., http://www.slovakshop.com/auctions/jppc2.jpg and http://www.discountcatholicstore.com/images/803-9409.jpg ) that reveal that it is, in fact, a painting. You can see the brushstrokes.

I don't think it's fair to call someone an atheist simply because they wanted to bring facts into the discussion. It's much more sensible to give credit to the truth: (1) The pope says he felt like Mary was protecting him during the shooting (2) no, this is not a photograph of the event (3) this is not a photograph at all (4) it was painted by a devoted Christian who wanted to give testimony to the relationship JPII had with Mary.

    Is that so atheistic?

I'm Catholic & consider JP II's life & teachings a great influence toward my conversion to Catholicism in 2000. However, to have faith doesn't mean that we abandon reason. The picture, which I agree to be "photoshopped," is sentimental. It may create an image of something we may or may not want to believe that might have occurred on a spiritual plane. But contrary to what is stated in the typical email (like the one I got today) that accompanies this photo, at the actual assassination attempt, Pope John Paul fell into the arms of his aides in his jeep, not onto the ground to be held by any visible woman. One doesn't have to believe this picture to have great faith in God or miracles. We don't build our credibility as Catholics by being credulous. JP II was a holy man of great reason and faith. Let's follow his example as we express our faith, particularly as we perpetuate his memory.

what a cheap attempt to make people believe that the earthly mother of Jesus had anything to do with this. They try the most ludicrous things to make people come back to their depleted flocks., without realizing they no longer deserve any credit. In fact they are responsible for the most horrendous atrocities ever seen in human history.

I agree that this is a fake. I found this painting for sale at a few different websites. There are apparent brushstrokes. Whoever did this mass email claiming that this painting was a real photo is obviously a prankster or an idiot, or both. At least this will bring the thought of God into the lives of many people. The joke may have been cruel, it is a fake, but the TRUTH behind the story reminds us that God loves us eternally.

Reading through some of the comments it's funny how this simple image can cause so much debate and personal attacks! Anyway that's not my point. I think this image, whether it is real or not, is a great reminder to Catholics of the power of Our Lady's intercession as Pope JP2 had a special devotion to Mary and survived the assassination attempt. As it is unclear whether this image is "Church-approved" (however Marian apparitions in Lourdes, Fatima and Guadalupe are Church approved) i think it is up to each individual to decide what to believe. The only possible problem i can see with this image is that if someone were to present it as fact when there is no clear evidence as it would make some people feel cheated or lied to. A powerful image nonetheless.
